The Story of a Superhero.
Mattia Villardita – A Spiderman in hospital wards
Mattia Villardita is twenty-nine years of age, a port logistics employee in Vado Ligure. Children hospitalized long-term in Paediatrics wards all over Italy see their dream come true thanks to him dressed as Spiderman. He gives them every minute of his free time.
Mattia’s story also started in a hospital, but he hardly ever speaks about it; he prefers to dwell on the present. In fact, his time is punctuated by trying to respond to the thousands of requests to bring Spiderman to hospital wards where there are children who need him.
“I am a volunteer,” he stresses, “I do good”. Mattia tells of the unconditional good that fills his days busy with work at the port and going round the hospitals.
During a long stay in hospital as a child, Mattia used to look out of the window and dreamt of his superhero: Spiderman. And now he has realised this dream, for himself and for others.
So Mattia puts on the Spiderman costume and becomes the superhero he dreamt of as a child. He wants to help as many children as possible, who from the beginning of their life had to face the arduous task of learning to fight, to continue to dream. Partly for fun and partly out of love, he has become a hero for them. They write to him, wait for him, listen to his jokes, or maybe receive the gift of a PC.
The enemy to be defeated is not always visible but, to these children, Mattia represents the dream of ‘victory’ that makes them smile, gives them energy, and for just 5 minutes chases away their thoughts.
And Mattia knows this.
