Rising Phoenix.
We are a small part of a much larger scheme
Rising Phoenix is a project aimed at pointing a spotlight at the Paralympic world and, in doing so, changing the perception and the attitude the world has towards disability.
“I got to know the power of Paralympic Sport during London 2012. Since then, I have been determined to talk about it to the largest possible number of people. It is a value that changes one’s life.”
Greg Nugent started his initiative to produce a film mainly because of an ideal, rather than an idea. This was the secret of his success. Disability is a precious asset, which more than any other condition expresses and encapsulates human possibilities. Being able to adapt, alongside cooperation, social relationships, reparation, diversity. Nugent was struck by a world that he probably thought he knew enough about, but soon discovered to be a far larger universe. In it he found that sense of humanity that he had seen during the Paralympic Games.
To change the world, we must share. Spread stories that are inspirational. It is necessary to use a narrative to create emotions. The emotional aspect is stronger than any information, treaty, notion, rule, or prejudice. Creating emotions, based on experiences, can change priorities, boundaries, start relationships and connections.
In Rising Phoenix disability, stereotyped by a state of want…, meets the value of diversity. An encounter of strength and determination, in no uncertain terms. Without explanations. And it overwhelms, leaves us speechless. It comes to the fore as a possibility. As an integral part of society.
Through sport, Rising Phoenix evokes a different World. They call them Heroes, but they are normal people. Whilst the spectators watch, listen… in admiration and amazement, every single feat of each athlete tells a true story that makes them feel different. And because of diversity, for the first time… the spectators come to terms with the prejudice which has led them to believe they are “worth more” but discover they are “worth less”.
This is the beginning of a world that can change.
