Giorgia’s story
Giorgia was born in Milan on March the 1st 2007.
At the age of 5 she started practicing rhythmic gymnastics but, when she was only 7 years old, in the spring of 2014, she was struck by an osteosarcoma that caused her right lower limb to become disarticulated. Giorgia initially thought it was all a bad dream, and her family’s first feelings were of anger and devastation.
Her greatest wish, however, has always been to return to the gym. Thanks to her determination, she convinced her parents to take her back to the gym, and after managing to do a handstand again, her smile came back! This is what motivated her mum and dad to help her get back into her beloved sport! Her favourite athletes are Martina Centofanti and Alessia Maurelli, both rhythmic gymnasts.
Giorgia would like to return to contest with able-bodied athletes or even in her own category, created especially for her in the 2017/2018 season. Her wish is to create a group of amputee girls to let them try this sport.
The meeting with the Association happened thanks to Giorgia’s dad, Stefano, who wrote an email to art4sport to get to know Bebe Vio and to look for suggestions regarding the spread of rhythmic gymnastics in the Paralympic world.
Giorgia joined art4sport in October 2018: the Association can help her to raise awareness of the sport even more and convince girls not to be afraid to try!
